In 2010 and early 2011 Wendy Leung, Owen Norquay and Dean Marino played shows as WENDY LEUNG (the band, not the person) and then promptly disappeared.
Maybe you saw Dean and Wendy in their other band Papermaps, or Owen in Soi Disant. But together, quietly and diligently they were also crafting a new sound into a new record. Crayon Wars is the first release for the band now renamed WENDY VERSUS and is set to invade your ears in June 2012, just before the summer heat pries open your pores.
Seamlessly juxtaposing organic and machine, WENDY VERSUS lives somewhere between deep ocean and outer space. This reinvention of songwriter Leung’s music is at once powerfully heartfelt and, grounded in pop, also makes you move your feet.
Their DNA is diverse; Wendy is on a constant mission to evade her classical pianist roots and embrace the electro-pop virus that’s infected her dark melancholic heart. Dean’s shoegazy, dreampoppy, radioheady atmospheric guitars expand outside the lines. And Owen’s west-coast indie-rock glitchy chatter-beats and toybox synth lines at once ground and brighten the landscape.
There’s an energy about it all. The colours, the shimmers, the vibrant countermelodies — an excitement of bursts and wonders. Listen. This is the music that will infect your soul and light you on fire!
